I’ve been messing around with some of my sites, and the idea of how to make money of them. Since I’m into art, photography and traditional painting I’ve been toying with the idea to sell my art over the internet. I’ve sold one of my paintings through online gallery and that sort of incited me into trying to do it myself. Selling onlineSetup First I need products. Since I’m producing art( let’s call it art for discussion sake ) I’ll try to sell as much as I can. Second, I need a website to present my art. Now, there are several options that are available.
Make my own site with a shopping cart of some sort. That involves lots and lots of development, testing, debugging and in general it’s a pain in the behind. I have the skills necessary but lack the time.
Use some sort of open-source application that has shopping cart integrated or such possibility. Nowadays there are many such applications: osCommerce is one of the most popular shopping applications for web. Then there is also ZenCart, also open-source application. One can even use Mambo/Joomla that have several options for shopping cart integration - amongst other one can integrate OS-Commerce directly into Mambo creating content-managed site with all the benefits of fully managed shopping application.
Final thing that one can do is to list their products on sites that have most issues resolved like eBay, Amazon or such. Thing that is lacking from this sites is possibility of customization. If I’m like an artist, and I have my style in visual expression, I do not take either credit or satisfaction that visual presentation of my work is in full control of some dude sitting in a faraway land lacking simple comprehension of my artistic needs.

What I’ve decided on is something between first and second choice. I’ve used Joomla with integrated VirtueMart application and done some of development to suite my needs in respect of payment interface. Let dwell on that a little more… |
